There has always been this constant debate on which system of astrology is more "accurate" and which one you should be following. Today, Western/Tropical astrology is deemed as more progressive and is widely used as the more accurate form of astrology. One reason for this is that Western astrology uses planets invisible to the naked eye, such as Uranus and Neptune, which ancient astrologers never saw or recorded. Sidereal astrology is ancient, and is also known as Vedic astrology or Hindu astrology. If you were to check your chart for each of these astrological studies, you would find completely different signs in most of your planets. For example, in Western astrology (the progressive astrology that most people use today) I am an Aquarius sun, Scorpio moon, and Cancer rising. In my Sidereal astrology chart, I am a Capricorn sun, Libra moon and my Cancer rising is the only placement that stays the same. But why is this?
The key differences on why charts vary so differently between these systems for a given birth date/time/place is because each has a very different way of looking at the same stars. In Western astrology, the Spring Equinox is the point when the Sun moves into the 1st degree of the sign Aries. This will always be true, that the first day of Spring marks the beginning of Aries season. At the Summer Solstice, the Sun moves into Cancer; the Autumn Equinox begins the Sun's movement into Libra and the Sun enters Capricorn on the Winter Solstice. Because of this, Western astrology is known for viewing these stars at a fixed point, but from Earth's point of view. The issue, then, lies in the fact that the Earth is never still. Earth's precession over thousands of years means that Earth is no longer in line with these same constellations. Sidereal astrology, on the other hand, focuses on the point of view of the stars, and is constantly changing by degrees so that it stays "accurate" with their positions. Over the years the stars have slowly changed location relative to Earth like mentioned before. The ecliptic plane has shifted enough in the last 2,000 years that the position of the sun and planets in relation to the signs no longer matches that of the old ecliptic plane. This means there is a twenty-four degree variance between the tropical system and the actual constellations. Vedic astrology takes precession into account and therefore calculates horoscopes based on the updated ecliptic path. Western astrology, however, sticks to the old path, which is more symbolic as opposed to astronomically accurate.
Knowing the key differences of these two astrological systems will help you decide which to follow, and give you a deeper understanding into your soul and mind. Both these systems were never meant to give you the same information, or to be used to come to the same conclusions. To make it easier, imagine Western astrology as your personality, your deep emotions and what holds you grounded to Earth in this earthly experience as a human. Western astrology's entire focus is on the seasons (that only matter on Earth), the placement of the Earth regardless of movement and the human experience entirely. As I mentioned before, Sidereal astrology is also known as Hindu astrology. According to Hindu teachings, life is meant to grow the soul. Vedic astrology is a spiritual science in this sense. So you can imagine Sidereal astrology as the astrology of the soul, where Earth and human experience is less important. This is also shown in the ways the planets are interpreted in each system. In Western astrology, the Moon symbolizes inner emotion, intuition, a grand feminine energy, whereas in Sidereal astrology the Moon represents the mind. Sidereal astrology is less emotional and personal, and also rather harsh and intense because it "doesn't care" about these earthly emotions one may feel during their day to day lives, but rather on the bigger picture and higher consciousness that not all people are in-tune with easily. This is why many people may relate to their Western astrology chart more than their Sidereal chart. Western astrology is more psychological, whereas Sidereal astrology is more accurate at predicting major life events because it is focused on fixed stars.
I say to look into both charts and systems and see which you identify with more. Understanding/ Getting your chart read for both would be ideal to understand yourself and your energy on a higher level, but people always have their preferences for one or the other. I believe that they are both accurate in their own ways, but each also has some flaws. Some people say that after understanding Sidereal astrology, they never went back to Western and it changed their lives, but some people love Western astrology only and never will relate to or understand their Sidereal charts. It is really up to you to choose!

This article is good at explaining the types of astrological systems, but was written by someone who believes completely in true sidereal astrology, so it is biased.
