The Atmakaraka (atma meaning soul and karaka meaning significator) can give you insight on your own soul's desire and what planet rules you in this life. Since Sidereal astrology is used to calculate this planet, we look into Vedic philosophy to understand the depth of this planet. Vedic philosophy states that a soul is reborn to complete unfinished business from its past lives. The atmakaraka can give insight on these goals, and on your soul's main focus.

To find the Atmakaraka of your chart, you must calculate your sidereal chart and then look at the planet with the highest degree out of these planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Saturn, or Jupiter.

ATMAKARAKA IN THE SUN: This person will have to learn to overcome their ego, and should become a humble and sensible person. The Atmakaraka Sun indicates the desires to fulfill success, fame and power. Therefore, all these can only be attained when one gives up ego and must maintain humility. In Sidereal astrology, the Sun represents the soul (in comparison to Western astrology where it represents the ego), so the soul feels "comfortable" having the Sun as an Atmakaraka. The Sun wants to follow their inspiration while also being a source of inspiration for others. Solar souls are born with the desire to lead and inspire others, but even leaders need to have compassion and vulnerability. Though the sun represents masculine energy, it is of the greatest divine masculine to protect and lead with kindness. If you have this as your Atmakaraka, you may see yourself as a creative leader who wants to express this, and benefit society. Humility and the overcoming of the ego is most important in your life lessons.

ATMAKARAKA IN THE MOON: This person may be touchy and emotional, and usually very caring and compassionate. Any disturbance of the home/family will make a Moon native feel uncomfortable and sad. These people tend to just "know things" and have strong intuition and a motherly vibe to them. Here, the soul wants to experience a deep, deep emotional bond and total acceptance from someone. The challenge for these natives is to be less codependent, "needy" and to not lose themselves in their relationships. These people must learn emotional and mental balance. The moon wants to protect others emotionally, as their gut instincts are usually always right. These people are usually deeply connected to the unconscious, and must learn to be more grounded.

ATMAKARAKA IN MERCURY: This person must try to control their speech and to be honest at all times. These people may be great writers, poets, and love learning. These people may see many ups and downs in close relationships, and tend to lose patience quickly. These people love new things and it may seem as they go through many "phases" in life, unable to stick to one thing or a decision for very long. Mercury natives must learn to be less distracted and focus on a main goal, as well as avoiding mind games. These natives would benefit greatly form understanding the power of the mind, and their own unique individuality. They are multi-talented, have a good sense of humor and have the power to fight for what they believe in.

ATMAKARAKA IN MARS: Mars natives have high energy levels and are passionate, opinionated and intense beings. These natives typically enjoy a debate, adventures and victories ( no matter how small ). Mars is seen as a cruel planet, meaning these people may come off as intimidating and "uncaring". The soul here desires to protect others and to use all this willpower to fight for something they believe in. But, these natives must learn to be less violent, accept losses, to be patient, and to pick and choose their battles over their aggressive passions. They may give too much of their energy to the wrong situations, and find themselves constantly begging/gasping for air while surrounded by it. Mars natives do not give up easily, and are suited to be strong fighters.

ATMAKARAKA IN VENUS: The Venus native loves beauty, art, music and harmony. This person must try not to engage in unhealthy affairs of lust or sex as they may give into those easily. This person is sensual, and makes many decisions off of this feeling. Love and romance is a great muse for Venus natives and their lives may center many decisions around it, but they also desire achievement of balance. Venus natives must accept relationships for how they are, control their sensuality and avoid excessive behavior or any kind. These natives may need to constantly reevaluate their morals and may find themselves romanticizing many things in life that does not make them better. Venus natives are natural peacemakers and are inclined to work greatly in social work and women's rights as they are a divine feminine energy.

ATMAKARAKA IN SATURN: This is a tough position for any individual to have in their horoscope, and has been feared for a long time. This person has an intense feeling of responsibility. Saturn natives may feel as though life is a punishment, as they have an "understanding" of their duty and expectations to the world, though it most likely is all in their heads. Saturn souls must learn that not every failure means they are worthless, and there is beauty in renewal and learning from mistakes. Saturn natives must learn to smile when their world seems to be falling apart, face harsh truths that they can not control, and overcome loneliness. These natives are usually mature no matter what the age, and there may have been a part of their childhood that caused this. These people must learn to let go of unrealistic expectations. Generally, Saturn natives are reliable, noble, honest, and have the ability to meet their goals with hard work that comes to them naturally.

ATMAKARAKA IN JUPITER: This person is a natural teacher. Their interests tend to fall into philosophy, teaching, spirituality, religion, or something they consider to be a higher purpose. Jupiter natives usually have strong principles and are happiest when they feel they have a purpose. But, they must learn to "relax", as not everything needs a deeper meaning and not everyone will share in their beliefs. They also may come off as preachy or know-it-alls, and must learn to respect other beliefs and supportive of them. These souls constantly hunger for expansion. Jupiter natives often experience good luck and good things may just come to them without any effort. These people must respect elders and care well for their children, as this may be where their karma from past life comes from.
